To become a homestay family, every household member over the age of 18 will require a screening and background check from DHS. As of November 1, screening checks are free for volunteers, and can be applied for through the school. If you already hold a clearance, please provide the school a copy.
We also require families to put together a small profile. A simple form will be provided and we ask families to attach a minimum of two photos. This information will be forwarded to your host student. After the screening and background check is completed and received, we will forward you the details of the Japanese student you will be hosting.
For new homestay families joining the program, we are also required to do a home inspection. The purpose of the house inspection is to confirm that the condition of your household is suitable for hosting an exchange student and is not something that should cause concern. The main aspects that will be observed are:
- A suitable room for the exchange student to sleep in (shared with a child of the same gender is also acceptable)
- A safe living environment -Nothing whether you have pets (so we can make sure we assign a student who isn’t allergic)
We will also be able to answer any questions you have at the time, as well as give you and your family some tips and ideas.
